"Do you know when you'll be chatting with Haim?" a text arrives. "I was hoping to ask if I can become their fourth member."

There is only a single issue: I also longs to be the Haims' newest recruit. What's more, we are in plentiful company. Multiple high-profile admirers have publicly coveted the role.

It's clear an irresistible appeal is going on. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana launched their path playing gigs at local delicatessens with their parents. Now they're multiple Grammy contenders.

Similar to the greatest ensembles, they're a inseparable unit. Their visuals often depict them striding in unison down the streets of Los Angeles. During performances, they perform with such pure happiness you find yourself thinking, "I wish to be part of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that audience members approached us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I got a bass'," remarks Alana, the youngest of the trio. "That is the greatest honor. That's an award in itself. We have succeeded if we can inspire people to start a band."

"Therefore everyone gets an invitation to be the next member of Haim."

Historic Milestone

The group are connecting from their homes, where they're taking a pause after an major tour in support of their fourth album, I Quit.

They're presently reeling from the news it's been in the running for best rock album at the Grammys – with Haim the pioneering all-woman band ever in contention for the prize.

"I follow the announcements every year, so it kind of feels like a surreal movie when your name is read out," notes Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this right or am I dreaming'?"

The importance of the nomination is deeply felt by the band.

"We truly set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a huge step," continues Alana. "However we're just grateful for the female artists that came before us."

Emotional Upheaval and Candor

The album emerged from a time of transition. All three sisters ended up single, and the music explores that odd transitional period where you're glad to be free, but not entirely ready to let go.

The lyrics follow endings and goodbyes. The sisters want love, but not the relationships they've experienced. You can hear them working out in real time who they want to be.

"That's a perfect way of putting it, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a personal statement. You have to actively work on ignoring the noise and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Development of Music

That newfound toughness called for a different sonic direction – more unpolished and direct than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that began with the drum sound.

"Percussion is such a detailed thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our book," jokes Alana. "I always say, our albums won't commence until we find the ideal drum sound."

Experiences and Collective Humor

The band's honesty fueled the album's marketing, where the sisters revealed some of their dating tales.

Someone broke up with Este over a health concern. Alana told a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"When you're going through these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no hope," explains Alana. "So to be able to share those stories and have them tell you more outrageous stories, it's therapeutic."

An Assured Legacy

It's not difficult sense a shift in the band. Today, Haim are more certain of their place in the industry.

They're festival headliners, with chart-topping albums and an worldwide fan base.

However Haim will forever be their top focus.

"Me and my siblings have been making music since I was little," concludes Alana. "It's like nothing else that we were destined for. And I'm really thankful we've reached this point and we're still making music."
